How to Get Your Police Crash Report
In Georgia, your crash report can be accessed at www.buycrash.com. On the main page, you will see a prompt to start your search and select the state where the accident occurred.
Step 1. Select “Georgia” and press “Search”.
Step 2. Enter the last name of the party involved in the wreck. Then, input the date of the motor vehicle accident. For the final part, enter one of the following:
- The VIN (vehicle identification number) is the car’s specific identifying code. A VIN is like a car’s fingerprint — no two vehicles have the same one. The VIN is 17 characters long and contains both numbers and capital letters (vehicles pre-1981 have between 11-17 characters).
You can find the VIN by looking on the outer dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle, where the corner meets the windshield. If it’s not there, it can be found on the back post of the driver’s side door where it latches closed. The VIN can also be found on the insurance card or policy, or the vehicle’s title and registration papers.
- The report number or local code refers to the police report generated and filed by the officer who responded to the car accident. You can request a copy of this report from the police officer. Typically, the investigating officer will provide the person at the scene of the crash with a receipt that contains the identification number for the police report. Contact the traffic division of the agency that responded to the crash to obtain a copy (there may be a small administrative fee). If you do not know the incident number, provide the name of the person involved in the wreck as well as the date, time, and location it happened.
Alternatively, you could try to get a free copy of the accident report from the claims representative of your insurance company, as they may have requested a copy. It can take up to a few weeks for the law enforcement officer to complete their report and make it available.
- The simplest method may be to enter the driver’s license number of the involved party. The driver’s license number for Georgia is located on the front of the license card toward the bottom.
Continue to follow the prompts from there. If you become stuck or can’t find your police crash report, there is an FAQ section that may answer your questions.
