Atlanta Car Accident Deaths Outpace Murders: What It Means

Traffic Crashes Now Claim More Lives Than Violent Crime in Metro Atlanta

The AJC reported that more Atlantans died in traffic accidents in 2024 than by homicide. There were 121 deaths in DeKalb county, the most out of the 425 total deaths distributed across Clayton, Cobb, Fulton, and Gwinnett.

That’s more than the 410 homicides in those same five counties.

Why Traffic Deaths Receive Less Attention Than Homicides

Homicides are dramatic — each one tells a story that’s unique and takes an extended investigation to understand. Traffic fatalities are much more straightforward (i.e., the pedestrian struck while crossing the street, the chain reaction wreck due to sudden stopping) but no less tragic.

The data, put together by Propel ATL, an organization dedicated to safer roads and Vision Zero, also includes stories about recent victims of “traffic violence”. They advocate that the term traffic violence better represents the system and choices that result in injury or death on the road.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Deaths Are Rising Despite Overall Declines

While traffic deaths decreased by nearly 10% compared to 2023, pedestrian and cyclist deaths increased by 4%, reflecting a broader national trend.

But the decrease in fatalities still hasn’t reached pre-COVID levels. Traffic deaths spiked in 2020, ironically due in part to having less drivers on the road.

Propel ATL’s Executive Director Rebecca Serna believes the main problem isn’t drivers, but design. Streets are made to move cars quickly through areas, resulting in high speeds and serious injuries.

These design flaws are most concentrated and felt in predominantly Black neighborhoods, with 6 out of 10 traffic fatalities happening in these areas. There was also a string of pedestrian fatalities along Peachtree Street in Atlanta recently, raising safety concerns ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Funding Delays and Missed Opportunities Stall Safety Progress

Despite promises to improve pedestrian safety and reduce speeding, much of the funding for Moving Atlanta Forward hasn’t been used. Council members criticize the Atlanta Department of Transportation for not prioritizing safety features during construction projects.

The problems with Atlanta’s corridors are evident and well-studied, but progress seems to be stalled. Much is made of the crime statistics in the city, yet little attention in comparison is directed to the equally if not more pressing issue of car accidents and pedestrian safety.

Traffic deaths and serious injuries can be reduced.

Cities like Helsinki, Finland and Hoboken, New Jersey have already achieved zero traffic fatalities. With intensive focus and will, Atlanta can do the same.

What to Do If You or a Loved One Is a Victim of Traffic Violence

No matter how safe a driver or pedestrian you are, other drivers, weather, or unexpected road issues can cause a traumatic accident. From suffering severe back injuries and concussions, to loss of limb or life, victims need an advocate in their corner to protect their access to medical care and right to full compensation.

That’s where our Atlanta personal injury lawyers at Gary Martin Hays & Associates come in to fight for justice.

We understand what it’s like to navigate the city streets, the dangers, and most importantly, the state laws and insurance bureaucracy governing traffic accidents. Insurance adjusters will do everything they can to undermine a personal injury claim, but we know their tactics. We’ll walk you through our strategies, explain your options, and answer every question you have regarding your case and our services.

Until there are zero deaths and injuries, Gary Martin Hays & Associates is here to serve Atlanta injured victims and their families. Contact us online or call us anytime at (770) 934-8000.
