Every year, nearly 80,000 Americans require hospital treatment from injuries caused by lawn mowers, according to a study by researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The majority of these injuries involve children 15 and younger and adults age 60 and older.

Devastating Injuries

An article in the American Family Physician notes than the average length of hospitalization for child victims of lawn mower injuries is 10 to 24 days.

"Most of these children need multiple surgical procedures, and up to 64 percent require some form of amputation. An estimated 2,000 children per year are permanently impaired as a result of lawn mower injury." — Richard Sadovsky, M.D., commenting on a study by J.R. Campbell

Defective riding lawn mowers and gas and electric walk-behind lawn mowers have all caused serious injuries. Defective fuel lines or cracked fuel tanks can present fire hazards, resulting in explosions and burn injuries. Zero-turn radius (ZTR) lawn mowers are prone to rollover accidents. And all power lawn mowers can seriously injure bystanders by throwing rocks and debris.

Lawn mowers have been recalled for defective blades that can break off while spinning and propel a piece of sharp metal into a bystander's body.

Back-Over Lawn Mower Injuries to Children

Some riding lawn mowers lack a back-over safety device that stops the blade from rotating when the riding mower backs up. Without this device, children following a lawn mower can be maimed or killed when unsuspecting operators back over them.
